The results of these demonstrations could be used by suppliers to improve future site characterisation , final status survey deployments , or to provide information for the development of other autonomous survey systems . Systems such as those employed during these EPRI demonstrations could reduce the cost and schedule of site characterisation and final status surveys by :

• Performing surveys autonomously instead of the typical , very labour-intensive practice of using handheld survey meters .
• Performing the requirements for scanning and fixed-point measurements in one step .
• Providing results in terms of radionuclide specific concentrations . This would likely avoid many of the investigations currently required of systems that provide only gross gamma counts .
• Performing the surveys at much higher scanning rates than current practices .

Additionally , the ability to locate sources precisely in the survey area and display the locations on 3D maps and / or camera images could reduce the amount of remediation required by focusing the removals on only the impacted areas and improve stakeholder confidence in the survey by providing a more understandable visualisation of the survey results .

The project results are summarised in the 2022 EPRI report Design and Demonstration of an Autonomous System for Radiological Characterization of Building Surfaces . Results of a similar project for characterisation of land areas are summarised in a 2020 EPRI report : Design and Demonstration of an Autonomous System for Radiological Characterization .
