Support the major replacements for HCFCs over the last decade . In 2015 , an estimated 525 000 metric tons of HFCs were produced and consumed globally . These refrigerants are used in a wide variety of heating , ventilation , air conditioning , and refrigeration ( HVAC & R ) equipment .
At talks in Kigali , Rwanda , in October 2016 , 196 countries that are parties to the Montreal Protocol reached an agreement that will see 85 % of the world ’ s HFCs phased out .
Aiming at protecting the climate and the ozone layer , the Kigali Amendment , the Montreal Protocol will be a powerful instrument against global warming .
The amendment entered into force on 1 January 2019 . The impact of the amendment will avoid up to 0.5 ° C increase in global temperature . In August 2019 , the Republic of South Africa ratified the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol . The goal is to achieve 80 % reduction in HFC consumption by 1 January 2045 . The impact of the amendment will avoid up to
0.5 ° C increase in global temperature by the end of the century .
The phase-down schedule is detailed below ( for developing countries such as South Africa the schedule to follow is highlighted ).
Daniel , so there you have it , South Africa will phase down HFCs as can be seen from the schedule above , remembering that this schedule may be amended at the next sitting .

An engineer who had an exceptional gift for fixing all things mechanical , and after serving his company loyally for over 30 years , happily retired . Several years later his previous employer contacted him regarding a seemingly impossible problem they were having with one of their multi-million rand machines . They had tried everything and had attempted to find someone to get the machine to work again , but to no avail . So , in desperation , they called on the retired engineer who had solved so many of their problems in the past .
The engineer reluctantly took the challenge and then went and spent a day studying the machine . Finally , at the
HUMOUR end of the day , he marked a small ‘ x ’ in chalk on a particular component of the machine and said , “ This is where your problem is ”.
The part was replaced and the machine worked perfectly again . The company received a bill for R50 000 from the engineer for his service . Shocked , they demanded an itemised accounting of his charges . The engineer responded briefly : One chalk mark , R1 ; Knowing where to put it , R49 999 . His account was paid in full and the engineer again returned to his peaceful retirement . RACA freepik . com www . hvacronline . co . za RACA Journal I September 2021 51
