TECH TALK
The consensus was that meaningful assessment requires measurement of actual airflow, pressure and electrical power consumption under operating conditions. Because equipment frequently operates away from its original design point, on-site measurement and verification remain the most reliable means of determining true system performance.
This system-level perspective aligns closely with the growing adoption of EC fan solutions, where manufacturers can certify the combined performance of the motor, electronics and fan assembly at specified duty points.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of evaluating energy-efficiency projects through a life-cycle cost lens rather than focusing solely on initial capital expenditure. Examples were cited where EC fan retrofits delivered significant energy savings, with some projects qualifying for Section 12L energy-efficiency tax incentives, further improving project payback periods. Participants also noted that performance-contracting and other financing mechanisms can enable upgrades to be funded from the operational savings they generate.
The discussion reinforced a broader industry trend towards assessing projects on total cost of ownership, operational performance and long-term financial returns rather than equipment purchase price alone.
EC MOTORS, HAZARDOUS AREAS AND FLAMMABLE REFRIGERANTS Questions were also raised regarding the use of EC technology in hazardous environments, including systems employing flammable refrigerants. Schoombie noted that in explosionprotected and other specialised applications, safety requirements take precedence over efficiency considerations. He added that EC motors and fans are available in ATEX-certified configurations for use in appropriately classified hazardous areas.
The discussion emphasised the importance of proper risk assessment, taking into account refrigerant charge size, zone classification and equipment surface temperatures. Depending on the application, this assessment may determine whether ATEX-certified equipment is required or whether alternative safety measures are sufficient to achieve compliance and safe operation.
The Q & A ultimately underscored that achieving meaningful energy performance requires a system-level approach. Maintenance practices, reliability, air quality, control strategies, financing mechanisms and safety considerations all influence the success of an HVAC installation. RACA networking
