PROJECT
procurement began as early as 2016, with installation progressing in phases. This extended timeline introduced a range of technical challenges, not least of which was the need to keep the system modern in the face of evolving technology.
Early installations based on previous-generation VRF systems required upgrading to align with newer models in its series, including updated control communication protocols compatible with modern BMS integration. To this end, LG graciously upgraded the specified VRF equipment at no cost to the project. At the same time, the issue of equipment warranties had to be carefully managed, as standard warranty periods had long since elapsed for equipment stored on site. Demonstrating the continued integrity of this equipment and negotiating extended warranty terms formed a critical part of the commissioning process. However, all the stored VRF equipment operated first time, and reaffirmed VMG Consultants’ decision to use LG VRF equipment.
“ Instead of a central plant serving the entire development, the facility could be divided into multiple independent HVAC systems, each aligned to the distinct requirements of each building type.”
Integrated mechanical services on the rooftop form part of the convention centre ' s flexible, highperformance HVAC infrastructure.
Architectural changes further complicated matters. Initial designs assumed conventional suspended ceilings with 600x600mm tiles, allowing straightforward access to ceiling-mounted equipment. However, later revisions introduced complex, plastered bulkheads and stepped ceiling profiles, significantly reducing accessibility. In areas such as the exhibition hall and conference centre, where more than 50 indoor ducted units are installed, this necessitated extensive co-ordination with architects and interior designers to incorporate discreet access panels without compromising aesthetics.
The result was a highly iterative co-ordination process involving HVAC, wet services, fire protection, electrical and architectural disciplines. Duct routing, sprinkler placement, lighting and detection systems all had to be reconfigured in response to changing ceiling geometries. The absence of uniform ceiling voids meant that each room effectively required a bespoke co-ordination solution. project
