Feature savings are. When correctly specified and installed, the financial return is immediate and long-term,” Fawcett says.
This mirrors global trends. According to a 2023 report by the International Energy Agency( IEA), heat pump adoption across all sectors could reduce global CO₂ emissions by over 500 million tonnes annually by 2030 if governments and industries accelerate uptake— especially in space heating and cooling systems.
Unlike residential properties, commercial environments – hotels, apartment blocks, hospitals and office parks – consume vast amounts of energy for both heating and cooling, often concurrently. Heat pumps, which operate by transferring heat rather than generating it, are uniquely positioned to deliver efficient service in both roles.
Fawcett explains that hybridised systems – serving both air conditioning and hot water from the same infrastructure – maximise efficiency, particularly in high-occupancy buildings.“ In places like student housing or hotels, your hot water demand is constant and significant. Integrating heat pumps to supply both water and climate control is not only possible, it’ s optimal.”
THE PITFALLS: INSTALLATION ERRORS AND THE RACE TO THE BOTTOM Despite their promise, heat pumps aren’ t without risk – particularly when poor-quality imports or installation practices are involved, says mechanical engineer Michael Carter, wet engineer: AI Hot Water Company, who does considerable work on refurbishments and replacements, in addition to installation.
“ People don’ t realise that you can install a Chinese-made heat pump that effectively stops working efficiently below 15 ° C. You need units engineered for colder climates – properly rated for 10 – 15 ° C.”
Installation is another weak point. Carter regularly encounters units installed in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas, which severely limits performance.“ These systems ulitise radiant air and are consequently designed to breathe. Placing them in cramped roof spaces, behind walls or in the basement kills efficiency,” he explains.
While consulting engineers may specify a heat pump, contractors often default to the lowest-cost option on a tender – an approach that undercuts long-term savings. This echoes findings from ASHRAE( the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), which
“ Heat pumps operate independently of sunlight and offer reliable savings regardless of the time of day.”
