ANNIVERSARY
AIRE GROUP MARKS 20 YEARS OF GROWTH business
By Eamonn Ryan
Engineering excellence and enduring values.
Reaching a 20-year milestone is no small achievement for any engineering company operating in South Africa’ s competitive construction and building services environment. For AIRE Group, the anniversary represents not just longevity, but the culmination of two decades of tenacity, technical growth and adherence to a set of values that have guided the business since its inception in 2006.
According to owner Dean Munsamy, the journey has been shaped as much by difficult periods as by milestones of expansion and success. Looking back, he reflects that two decades in business can feel both fleeting and demanding.“ Twenty years goes by faster than you think, and slower than it feels when you ' re in the thick of it,” he says.
" The company began as AIRE-ZN, founded on a simple but ambitious belief – that South Africa’ s HVAC sector could benefit from higher standards of engineering excellence. The early years were defined by determination and persistence rather than glamour. One of our first defining achievements was securing our initial major commercial contract, which was an important breakthrough for a young firm seeking credibility," says Munsamy.
The 2008 / 09 global financial crisis tested the company, but it survived through lean restructuring. The 2017 national expansion required formalised processes, stronger project management, and regional teams.
Yet perhaps the most profound moment in the company’ s history was the loss of its founder and Dean’ s wife, Joelyn Rose Munsamy, whose vision had been instrumental in launching the business. Her passing forced the team to reflect deeply on whether they possessed the character to carry forward her legacy.
THE MOMENT THAT SPARKED THE BUSINESS The origins of the company itself lie in a deeply personal moment. Before launching the business, Munsamy had been working for a consulting engineering firm but strongly felt he belonged in the contracting business, which was a passion.
One morning, his wife Joelyn confronted the issue directly:“ She said to me,‘ You don’ t look happy doing what you’ re doing. Why don’ t you start your contracting business again? I believe you can do it,’” he recalls.
Her encouragement proved decisive.“ She was the spark behind all of this,” Munsamy explains.“ She believed in the idea completely and pushed me to pursue it. Without her

Her philosophy – summed up in the phrase‘ quality work by people who care’ – remains embedded in the company’ s culture. The emphasis on integrity, people and technical excellence continues to guide the organisation, even as its scale and geographic reach have grown significantly.

With her support and confidence behind him, along with a few others, Munsamy began planning what would eventually become the AIRE Group. From the outset the vision extended far beyond a single regional operation.
The long-term goal, he explains, was always to establish a national organisation, with regional operations serving the major economic centres of South Africa while maintaining consistent technical standards and service delivery.
That early clarity of purpose helped shape the company’ s growth trajectory. What began as a small KwaZulu-Natal contractor gradually evolved into a national business – fulfilling the vision the couple had originally imagined.
The expansion into a national group required substantial cultural and operational adjustments. As the company grew, it transitioned from a family-run operation into a more structured organisation with clear systems and accountability. Managing projects across different regions also meant developing a corporate culture strong enough to function without constant oversight from head office.
Adopting ASHRAE, SMACNA and SANS standards ensures consistent quality across projects. " In a crowded HVAC and refrigeration market, our strength is technical depth. Beyond installation, AIRE Group handles the full project lifecycle: designing, engineering and installing HVAC systems, manufacturing ductwork and dampers, and providing in-house architectural drafting and HVAC design for tailored solutions. Commissioning and maintenance services complete the offering, giving clients a single contractor for all building services needs."
