HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH ?
This could have broad meaning , but of course I mean the drastic increases in shipping costs that seem to not be slowing down – thus affecting literally every imported product into the country , and South Africa is a major importer of goods if you didn ’ t know !
Some have slammed shipping companies for milking the situation that saw the price of containers moving from one side of the world to the other double , then triple , then it was ten times the price and recently I heard a figure for shipping costs that almost equalled the stock value itself .
Countries need goods , but at what point does the cost of shipping just become unaffordable , or too great a cost transferred to the end user , or creates the situation where importers have to just dump stock to break even which in turn creates another challenge down the line on pricing ?
Some expect the supply chain to start
seeing recovery as soon as mid-2022 , however other experts foresee that globally there will only be recovery from 2023 , while still others believe it may be more years before things get back to pre-covid levels – if they recover at all . The question now is , at what point do importers just say no to the price increases seen of late , and what implications would this have for the future ?
