MORE ABOUT BMS
The monthly technical meeting for SAIRAC KZN took place on 11 April where
members and guests learned more about building management systems
(BMS) during this well-attended event.

he talk was presented by Rowan Van Wyk of Integrated
Controls Systems who addressed the KwaZulu-Natal
centre of the South African Institute of Refrigeration and Air
Conditioning (SAIRAC) on all things BMS.
He started by looking what a BMS is and why you need it,
looking at the various components that make up a BMS. He
spoke about human-machine interfaces as well as graphical
user interfaces, data logging, reporting, alarm management,

with IoR.

and event logging. Van Wyk’s talk also looked at architecture
and communication protocols, touching on popular options
such as BACnet, Konnex, Modbus, Lon works/Lon talk, and
other protocols.
In addition, his presentation looked at the very important
issue of cyber security and threats, giving some advice in terms
of antivirus software and fire walls. The talk concluded by
looking at the future of BMS.
As with the other centres, the chairman also announced
the new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the
Institute of Refrigeration (IoR), and Cyril Macquet-Maurel, who
heads up the KZN centre, shared the info with everyone in
