TECH TALK
Sanha’ s ACR copper press fittings are designed specifically for refrigeration and air-conditioning applications, where operating conditions are more demanding, including VRV / VRF and heat pump applications. The system supports pressures of up to 48 bar and temperatures ranging from-40 ° C to + 150 ° C, making it suitable for a wide range of HVAC & R environments.
Several design features enhance reliability. A three-point press profile provides stronger mechanical integrity than conventional two-point systems, while a dual sealing ring configuration creates an additional barrier against refrigerant leakage. This is particularly important given the small molecular size of many refrigerants. The use of a specially engineered HNBR elastomer – Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber, a high-performance synthetic rubber derived from standard nitrile rubber( NBR), but with an important upgrade: the polymer has been hydrogenated to improve its durability – further improves sealing performance, accommodating minor imperfections in pipe surfaces and increasing contact area.
The fittings are also clearly differentiated from standard plumbing components through distinct markings and design features, reducing the risk of incorrect installation.
Sanha’ s response includes its REFHP( or RefHP) range of highpressure solder fittings, designed for CO₂ applications operating at pressures up to 130 bar. CO₂ offers several advantages: a global warming potential( GWP) of just 1, no ozone depletion, and lower production and operational energy requirements compared to traditional refrigerants. It is also non-toxic, non-flammable, and cost-effective.
Advancements in CO₂ system design – such as parallel compression and ejector technologies – have improved performance even in warmer climates, further accelerating adoption worldwide.
Sustainability formed a key underpinning of the discussion. Sanha’ s approach extends beyond product design to include manufacturing practices, material selection and resource management. The company holds multiple ISO certifications and has received a gold rating from EcoVadis for its sustainability performance. Initiatives such as recyclable packaging, water purification systems, and energy-efficient production processes reflect a broader commitment to reducing environmental impact. networking associations
PRACTICAL BENEFITS ON SITE From a contractor’ s perspective, the appeal of press technology lies in its simplicity and efficiency. Training requirements are minimal – basic competency can be achieved within an hour – and the tools are battery-operated, enhancing portability and reducing site hazards associated with cables and gas equipment.
A notable feature highlighted during the presentation is Sanha’ s‘ leak path’ functionality. This allows unpressed connections to be easily identified during pressure testing, ensuring that installation errors are detected before system commissioning. According to Schrick, this contributes to a significant reduction in leak incidents compared to traditional soldering.
Although the upfront cost of press fittings may be higher, the overall project economics often favour the technology. Reduced labour time, fewer safety requirements and faster project completion can translate into meaningful cost savings – particularly on large-scale installations.
THE SHIFT TOWARD CO₂ REFRIGERATION The second part of the presentation addressed a broader industry trend: the transition toward CO₂ as a refrigerant under European F-gas regulations. Driven by tightening global regulations on fluorinated gases, many sectors – including retail refrigeration and food processing – are increasingly adopting CO₂-based systems.
INDUSTRY RECEPTION AND OUTLOOK The Tech Talk concluded with an interactive Q & A session, where attendees raised practical considerations around cost, availability, training and compatibility with existing systems. The response from participants indicated strong interest, particularly in the safety and efficiency benefits of press technology.
As Schrick noted, press fittings have already become the dominant connection method in many European markets, accounting for the vast majority of pipe joints. With the introduction of ACR-specific solutions, the South African HVAC & R sector appears poised to follow suit.
For an industry facing increasing pressure to improve safety, reduce environmental impact and deliver projects more efficiently, the message was that the future of pipe connections may well lie in pressing rather than soldering. RACA
