DATA CENTRE FEATURE SERIES
Two primary approaches dominate: scheduled maintenance and predictive maintenance. While predictive maintenance – often supported by AI and advanced analytics – offers significant potential, its effectiveness depends heavily on data quality, system configuration and human oversight.
Predictive systems rely on historical data, performance trends and equipment specifications to identify potential failures before they occur. However, without accurate inputs and proper monitoring, these systems can miss critical warning signs. As such, many operators continue to rely on scheduled maintenance as a baseline, supplementing it with predictive tools where appropriate.
One of the most critical aspects of cooling system maintenance is filtration. Modern liquid cooling systems often utilise extremely fine channels to transfer heat efficiently. Even minor contamination can obstruct these channels, leading to overheating and potential equipment failure.
This is particularly important in direct-to-chip and immersion cooling systems, where fluid quality directly impacts performance. Unlike conventional chillers, which may rely on basic strainers, advanced systems require high-precision filtration and continuous monitoring of fluid condition.
Sensors play a key role in this process. Differential pressure sensors, for example, can detect blockages in filters or coils by measuring changes in airflow or fluid resistance. Similarly, vibration sensors can identify early signs of mechanical failure in pumps or fans, enabling proactive intervention.
Despite advances in monitoring technology, redundancy remains the ultimate safeguard. Data centres are typically designed with multiple layers of backup – from duplicate cooling components to geographically distributed facilities – ensuring continuity even in the event of system failure.
Maintenance also extends to control systems. Building management systems must be regularly verified and updated, as they regulate critical parameters such as temperature, flow rates and system response.
In an environment where the cost of failure can be extraordinarily high, maintenance is not merely a support function – it is a central pillar of operational resilience. A balanced strategy that combines scheduled servicing, intelligent monitoring and robust system design remains the most effective approach. RACA
