NO CARE FOR CONSEQUENCES
Something I saw recently made me wonder how we have got here …
Travelling home one evening recently , the traffic was slow as it usually is , and I saw an odd occurrence - this occasion it was not a taxi . An 8-ton open truck was stopped speeding in the emergency lane and issued a ticket by the traffic officer on the scene . As the traffic was really crawling this particular day , a couple of kilometres down the road to my utter bafflement … came the same truck flying past everyone in the emergency lane yet again … the fine issued clearly meant nothing .
Taking this a little closer to home , a particular point that is mentioned regularly for this industry is along the same lines . There is little thought for the consequences of actions now down the line . This can be from the very choices the client insists on ( when they should be heeding advice from the professionals ) to the sourcing of equipment and service providers .
Are things ever going to shift back to that of quality , not only now but for the long run ? The work carried out in these sectors is “ supposed to ” last a very long time , but the quick and nasty still seems to be sticking around with the thoughts of “ we will just replace the system in a couple of years ” – which never happens , or “ we plan to sell the facility anyway within a few years so the HVAC system doesn ’ t matter ” or on the more costly side “ we never knew the maintenance and availability of parts would be such a challenge ”.
Hopefully since you all attended FRIGAIR 2022 , you had the opportunity to discover , learn and engage with all the industry ’ s most reputable suppliers and service providers who know that having thoughts on the future is really key for the sustainability and good reputation of the HERVAC sectors , rather than the comments out there of apprehension because of getting done in !
In this issue we cover local and international news , as well as our regular contributors and other opinion pieces – we hope you find value in this sharing of knowledge and welcome your feedback . Our features include personal protective equipment and a glimpse of another complex subject : chillers versus VRF systems , that we trust will give you something to think about when considering the trends of the future .
Our cover project is a parts-manufacturing facility at the special economic zone in Rosslyn Pretoria , that produces bumpers and associated products that was intricately navigated through the use of customised Revit design software , the latest available and highly accurate BoQ generation and of course top-quality products , the client being a world-wide brand . We also profile Karen Govender who chose to specialise in HVAC after starting out in the green building sector .
This month ’ s quote that caught my interest was one that was parapharased from the original but is still worth sharing in its paraphrased form , especially in today ’ s environment that many can associate with !
“ Let ’ s not be rocking chairs … where there is a lot of movement but we never actually get anywhere ”.
