If tanning is sought today, the white skin has been the ultimate goal for centuries for both religious and social reasons. Having a white skin was synonymous with success. Tanning was reserved for the working class, those who work outdoors and could be protected from the sun. In ancient times, sun exposure appears as a remedy against diseases such as tuberculosis.
