The main theme was “Integration and its different meanings” – an essential starting point for the forum members in order to attain a common understanding of what integration means. The forum began with a presentation from Johanna Jahnukainen of the National Institute of Health and Welfare about the concept of dialogue. Ms. Jahnukainen raised important key points on how facilitating dialogue between, among and within different stakeholders is a good approach to be more effective in providing services related to integration. Among the key points mentioned were: presence of empathy, openness, welcoming approach, constructive criticism, patience, non-verbal communication, responsiveness (listening and being heard) and understanding diversity. And with this in mind, we continued on with dialogue!

The group discussion focused on the possible meanings of integration. The main points considered were that integration is a two-way process that concerns not just those who moved to Finland but the whole society in general. Integration means more than being employed – it includes having a social network, learning the language, having Finnish friends, being involved in hobbies or sports and most importantly feeling at home.

The process of integration is personal and is different for everyone.

To be “integrated” means to become a part of the Finnish society but at the same time retain your own identity.
