few years ago , I was traveling to Spain with my husband and children . I had checked all of our passports , purchased the tickets and had carefully packed my carryon for anything we might need during our eight hour flight . I had traveled internationally before and was looking forward to visiting some friends . The ticket agent took our passports and reviewed our itinerary . Without expression , she handed me back my passport and informed me that I would not be traveling . I learned that day that my passport required a minimum of three months from the date of travel to enter Spain . We were scheduled to return two months before mine would have needed to be renewed , which was apparently not enough time . I also learned that this time frame varies based on country . Some require six months .
My husband ended up flying with the kids that day and I rushed to a passport office for same-day service to catch a flight the next day . While it wasn ’ t the worst thing that could have happened , it definitely taught me that airlines have no obligation to share this information with you . When booking your flight , you will not be notified about the requirements of the country you are visiting .
