Awards Mary Gadbaw Davis, CNM, received the Nightingale Awards for Nursing® People’s Choice award from Oakland University after providing inspiring, compassionate prenatal care to a couple whose baby was tragically lost in utero. Davis was nominated by the couple and selected by a review committee made up of consumers, CNOs, and CEOs from among more than 100 other nominees. The story of the care Davis provided received a standing ovation at t he honorary event in May. Cecilia Jevitt, CNM, El Rio’s Birth and Women’s Health Center had long been anticipating its 10,000th birth —only to have 2 babies born simultaneously at 4:28pm on International Day of the Midwife, Sunday, May 5. Cece Dirks, CNM, attended one of the births at Tucson Medical Center, and Fran Wertman, CNM, attended the other at the birth center. The birth center, opened in 1982 by Kathryn Shrag and Marianne Shinoskie, was recently designated the first baby-friendly facility in Arizona by Baby-Friendly USA. The 10,000 births represent babies born at the 3 different homes of the birth center, Pima St, Wyatt Ave, our current home on Grant St., and Tucson Medical Center. Life’s Journey OB/GYN is a brand new, all female private group practice providing full service gynecologic and obstetric care in DuBois, Pennsylvania. Dr. Kelly Duckett opened her doors February 25, and new graduate Myra DeLuca, CNM, joined the practice at that time. Karen Swift, CNM, of WomanCare PLLC provided postpartum support. Denise M. Ellison, CNM, delivered her first grandchild, Gabriella Ellison, on November 1, 2012. She is the daughter of Denise’s son, James, and his wife Keri. Tina Johnson, CNM, and Peter Johnson, CNM, celebrate their first grandson, Noah was honored for her long-term contributions to US midwifery at the last Tampa Bay chapter meeting. Special guest and midwifery pioneer Dorothea Lang, CNM, was also present. The National Association For Continence presented Katharine O’Dell, CNM, with its Rodney Appell Continence Care Champion award at the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates’ 2013 Annual Symposium in Savannah, GA, in March. Kerri Schuiling, CNM, ACNM senior Obituaries staff researcher, was honored by the Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic as an Esteemed Woman of Michigan. She will be honored at a VIP event in September. It is with a heavy heart that the Bethany Women’s Healthcare family informs you of the passing of our colleague, mentor, and friend Lylaine Gavette, CNM, on March 26. She was a blessing to all women she cared for and worked with during her too short life. We will carry her always in our hearts. She requests random acts of kindness be done in her memory. Taylor Krimm, born to Kristina and Taylor Krimm and big sister Alba on April 23, weighing 6lbs 13 oz. Megan Dunn, CNM, and her husband the arrival of Gavin William Rice on January 25, 2013 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. He joins big brother Jackson Lee and proud parents Christina (Kennedy) and Greg Rice. Amie is very grateful to Birgit Dugan, CNM, and Beth Culver, CNM, for guiding her daughter through a successful VBAC, making it easier for Amie to step back from her CNM role and be just mom. Emily Stange, CNM, and her husband Erik Malcolm welcomed their first son, Simon Quickening Summer 2013 announce with joy the birth of their son Henrik David Stange, born February 23, 2013, at Sykehus Innlandet in Lillehammer, Norway.
