Gramática B 1
Preterite Tense of leer, oír, ver, decir, hacer, and tener
The verbs leer, oír, ver, decir, hacer, and tener all have irregularities in the preterite tense.
In the verbs leer and oír, the i between the two vowels changes to y in the él, ella, Ud., and
ellos, ellas, Uds. forms. In the other forms, leer and oír require an accent mark on the i to
separate vowel sounds and to indicate how these words are pronounced.

The preterite tense of the verb ver uses the regular -er verb endings, but without any
accent marks.

Learning the irregular preterite-tense stem of decir (dij), hacer (hic), and tener (tuv) and
the endings -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, and -ieron will help you to use the preterite tense
of these three irregular verbs. You will notice that tener is conjugated exactly like estar minus
the es- prefix.
Note: The c in the preterite-tense stem for hacer changes to z in hizo; dijeron is also an exception
to the above because no i is required for the preterite ending.
