This year we have seen so many innocent lives lost at the hands of those in authority. With Obama sending drones into the Middle East, murdering civilians, or black men and women in the US & UK being unjustly killed by police officers. In most of these cases justice will not be served. Who is going to arrest Obama for war crimes? The officers that killed Michael Brown (Ferguson, 2014), Eric Garner (New York, 2014) and Jimmy Mubenga (London, 2010) were all cleared to walk free in recent weeks. When consoling the families of these men, what do you say? Where is the justice in this? How can you justify God’s will in this? Where is God in this?
One Sabbath evening, after a grand jury had decided against indicting Daniel Pantaleo, the officer that killed Eric Garner, I had to have a conversation with God. First Darren Wilson got to walk free, now this guy. How many more? But as I was thinking, I was reminded of something very important. Authorities have a long history of murdering the innocent and getting away with it, and if any one knows or understands what that’s like it’s Jesus Christ.
2014 saw an unprecedented spate of racist killings and police brutality in America. What is the church's response? And how can we share love and comfort?
