Dodging a qualifications bullet Quartzite quarry shines
environmentally
There are currently between 2 000 and
3 000 surface mines in South Africa
according to the DMR database, of which
barely a handful are managed by certified
mine managers. Yet the first published
draft of regulation 2.6 of chapter 2 of the
Mine Health and Safety Act absurdly
requires all surface mines to have certified
mine managers.
NPC Sterkspruit Aggregates is a
combination quartzite aggregate quarry
and adjacent ready-mix concrete batch
plant, operating as a subsidiary of Natal
Portland Cement Company in the Outer
West area in Durban. The tough quartzite
has an especially high silica content.
