WINNING
when quarry vehicles pass over it. Due to the
narrow nature of most quarry haul roads,
straddling a windrow is unavoidable. It is
advisable that the operator uses the side of the
section of the haul road that is free of large
lumps of material or rocks. This may require
operators to be instructed to yield or stop if
another vehicle with right of way, according
to quarry policy, approach from the opposite
direction in the clear section of the haul road.
Dry steering refers to the practice of
turning the haul truck's front wheels while
it is not moving or parked. This causes
excessive forces on the sidewalls of the tyres
and should be avoided at all costs. The truck
should be in motion before the operator
turns the front tyres.
Haul road check list
Training of quarry vehicle operators in
hazard identification is the first step in
reducing tyre damage. Operators and
supervisors should also be encouraged
to notify operators of possible damage to
their tyres while operating the vehicle to
limit damage.
In the load zone the floor should be
smooth and water removal adequate.
Debris should be cleared away, so vehicles
don’t drive over rocks. Operators should
ensure that trucks leave under full,
continuous acceleration and can return
without making tight, high-speed turns.
At the dump zone the floor should also
be smooth. The haul road should be able
to allow trucks to enter at high speed,
parallel to edge. The operators should
ensure that the trucks brak
