GEARING UP FOR 49TH ANNUAL
QUARRYING CONFERENCE
By Robyn Grimsley
The Institute of Quarrying Southern Africa will hold its 49th annual conference and exhibition, in
conjunction with Aspasa, in April. This year, focus is on health, wellness and safety within the industry.
T
his year sees the Institute of
Quarrying Southern Africa host
its 49th annual conference and
exhibition at Durban’s Elangeni
Hotel. The two-day conference will include
a static exhibition that gives delegates an
opportunity to view the latest technology
on offer in the quarrying industry. Both
the institute and Aspasa will also hold their
annual general meetings during the event.
Once again, speakers at the conference
will focus on areas of interest to the
industry, including legislation, the
environment and health, safety and
wellness. Everyone in the mining and
quarrying industries (and other industries
as well) is very aware of the importance of
health and safety. What tends to receive
less focus is the area of wellness. However,
a well workforce is likely to be more
productive, and have fewer preventable
incidents, which is one reason there needs
to be more focus on this aspect.
Aspasa Awards
This year’s conference will once again se e
Aspasa handing out its Health and Safety
and Environmental Awards. This year,
however, the awards will be announced at
a prestigious gala dinner event, hosted by
Aspasa and various sponsors, on 19 April
2018 rather than during the conference
itself. Certificates of Achievement will
be presented to both individuals and
companies that have shown improvement
and performance.
The awards are presented to Aspasa
members whose performance during the
2017 audit season was outstanding in one
of the established categories, and recipients
for each category are decided by the
independent auditors.
