In addition, neighbour relations are an important facet of the business. The Henley on Klip community is tightly knit with an active community forum that regularly engages with the mine.
Recently, Glen Douglas commissioned a postgraduate specialist with a PhD in noise monitoring to identify the mine’ s most prominent noise sources.
“ We have now isolated the main noise generation point. Last year we went through an extensive process where we did noise sampling in the community and on site for a whole week. Neighbours had been notifying us when they detected an irritating noise. It was interesting that the noise we identified was there constantly, but it was more audible at specific times. The origin of the noise is the tertiary metallurgical plant, and we are now in the process of doing modifications to that plant to mitigate the noise,” says Hattingh.
Overall, Glen Douglas mine is a blueprint for quarry operations in South Africa, and a clear indication of how a team can improve operational processes with planning and team commitment as the foundation. n
