The Institute of Quarrying is celebrating a century since its founding this year. With its beginnings in Wales during World War I, the professional body represents over 5 000 members across the UK, Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and South Africa working in the mineral extractives sector. Institute president Miles Watkins said,“ As an industry we have come a very long way over the last 100 years. Now we’ re casting our sights on the opportunities for the next century. That’ s about further enhancing the sector’ s reputation as a career that’ s open equally to women and men, encouraging greater diversity in the workplace, as well as creating a more joined-up global approach to what we do and how we do it.”
Caterpillar has announced that it will be establishing its global headquarters in the Chicago area, rather than the previously announced headquarters complex in Peoria, Illinois, although the majority of the company’ s employees will still be based in Peoria. Since around two-thirds of the company’ s business has come from outside the US for the past five years, the decision was made to locate the new headquarters closer to a global transportation hub to enable easier interaction with global customers, dealers, and employees. Caterpillar expects about 300 employees to be based in leased office space, with a limited number of senior executives moving in from early this year.
Australian Border Force officers at the Port of Melbourne used sophisticated X-ray technology to detect cocaine and methamphetamine worth USD186-million concealed inside heavy mining machinery being transported from South Africa in December, reports Victoria’ s The Age newspaper. Using upgraded container X-ray equipment, police discovered 254kg of cocaine and 104kg of methamphetamine hidden by activated charcoal after detecting anomalies with an iron ore extractor. James Watson, ABF Regional Commander Victoria and Tasmania, said the improved container X-ray allows X-rays to penetrate further into sea containers than ever before— in this case through several layers of heavy industrialised steel.
