The average score of all ISHE Audits for 2018 is 87.44% with the

A
spasa, as an industry member
association, requires that the
audits assist members in their
attainment of the policy goal
of continued performance improvement.
Therefore the aim of the audits is to add
value to participating members by discussing
options for corrective actions of identified
non-conformances, and to increase
management and employee awareness of
legislation and industry best practice.
A total of 94 ISHE (Initiating Safety
and Health Education) Audits have been
conducted for this year and the main
objective of the ISHE Audit is to add value
to every operation and identify those issues

where the operation needs to improve to be
fully legally compliant.
For some, it has been a strenuous
year again within the constraints and
limitations of the industry, but credit
needs to go out to those employers and
employees who really try to make a
difference to ensure everybody’s best
health and safety conditions.
However, employers need to be aware of
and concerned about cost cutting on safety
related issues during difficult times, as this
will jeopardise legal compliance.
Audit scope
The ISHE Audit Protocol is a tough
process to comply with, and what makes
it even more difficult is the different
interpretations of legal requirements
by the DMR Inspectorate. The auditor
shares information and experiences
from different audits in different regions
with members, and it is evident that the
enforcement and policies of requirements
change from region to region.
The overall purpose of the ISHE Audit
is not to ‘catch people out’, or look over
your shoulder to see if you have done your
job, or even to hide something from the
auditor to see if he picks it up. The audit
process is where mutual respect is shown
in a professional way to help the operation
identify problems or potential problems
that could lead to either accidents or
incidents, or non-conformances to
legislation, regulations, own policies
