A QUALIFICATION PATH:
THE LEGACY OF SIMON TOSE’S
TWO-YEAR TERM
By Eamonn Ryan
Simon Tose stood down as chairman of the Institute of
Quarrying Southern Africa (IOQSA) at the 50th anniversary
conference in April, at the conclusion of his statutory two-
year stint. His major achievement was to have put in place
for the first time, a qualification path which will enable
future generations of South Africans to become quarry
managers.

n the future, it will be a legal
requirement of the Department of
Mineral Resources that mine managers
have a formal minimum qualification.
This has been an arduous task given the
meagre resources of the IOQSA, but Tose
believes he has put in place the platform
for a qualifications regime to enable more
and more individuals to qualify and align
to a globally recognised quarry manager
qualification path – and join IOQSA.
His two-year term commenced with
fundamental work required on the
structure of the IOQSA and to open
up the quarrying industry to greater
professionalism in terms of qualifications.
