A QUALIFICATION PATH: THE LEGACY OF SIMON TOSE’S TWO-YEAR TERM By Eamonn Ryan Simon Tose stood down as chairman of the Institute of Quarrying Southern Africa (IOQSA) at the 50th anniversary conference in April, at the conclusion of his statutory two- year stint. His major achievement was to have put in place for the first time, a qualification path which will enable future generations of South Africans to become quarry managers. 28_QUARRY SA| JULY/AUGUST 2019 I n the future, it will be a legal requirement of the Department of Mineral Resources that mine managers have a formal minimum qualification. This has been an arduous task given the meagre resources of the IOQSA, but Tose believes he has put in place the platform for a qualifications regime to enable more and more individuals to qualify and align to a globally recognised quarry manager qualification path – and join IOQSA. His two-year term commenced with fundamental work required on the structure of the IOQSA and to open up the quarrying industry to greater professionalism in terms of qualifications. www.quarryonline.co.za
