Recognising excellence,
rewarding innovation
By Robyn Grimsley
In every industry, there are companies, practices, people and innovations that stand out from the rest,
and quarrying is no different. Industry and sector awards seek to recognise industry members who
make a significant contribution; the ASPASA Health & Safety and Environmental Awards and the
Concrete Society’s Fulton Awards do exactly that.
O
n 21 April 2017 the Aggregate
and Sand Producers Association
of Southern Africa (ASPASA)
once again honoured some of the
industry’s top performers in the areas of health
and safety and environmental excellence.
The awards ceremony took place at the
Institute of Quarrying Southern Africa
(IQSA) and the ASPASA Annual Conference
and Exhibition, was held at the Coastlands
Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks.
ASPASA Health & Safety Awards 2016
The awards in the health and safety
category were handed out by independent
auditor and consultant Marius van Deventer.
Van Deventer carried out over 100 health
and safety audits in 2016, and almost 50% of
ASPASA members achieved an audit score of
above 90%, an incredible accomplishment.
The average audit score was 84.54%.
According to Van Deventer, South Africa’s
audit protocols and practices are global
leaders, which makes the achievements of
those honoured by these awards even more
significant. The ASPASA Health & Safety Awards
recognise the contributions of individuals and
operations to the industry as a whole.
