Recognising excellence, rewarding innovation By Robyn Grimsley In every industry, there are companies, practices, people and innovations that stand out from the rest, and quarrying is no different. Industry and sector awards seek to recognise industry members who make a significant contribution; the ASPASA Health & Safety and Environmental Awards and the Concrete Society’s Fulton Awards do exactly that. O n 21 April 2017 the Aggregate and Sand Producers Association of Southern Africa (ASPASA) once again honoured some of the industry’s top performers in the areas of health and safety and environmental excellence. The awards ceremony took place at the Institute of Quarrying Southern Africa (IQSA) and the ASPASA Annual Conference and Exhibition, was held at the Coastlands Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks. ASPASA Health & Safety Awards 2016 The awards in the health and safety category were handed out by independent auditor and consultant Marius van Deventer. Van Deventer carried out over 100 health and safety audits in 2016, and almost 50% of ASPASA members achieved an audit score of above 90%, an incredible accomplishment. The average audit score was 84.54%. According to Van Deventer, South Africa’s audit protocols and practices are global leaders, which makes the achievements of those honoured by these awards even more significant. The ASPASA Health & Safety Awards recognise the contributions of individuals and operations to the industry as a whole. Safety Practitioners Awards for Excellent Performance This category recognises safety practitioners for the support and groundwork they do in their different areas of responsibility. • Laurencia Maphumulo (Midmar Crushers) • Ellen van der Westhuizen (Lafarge Olive Hill) • Lucretia Jansen van Rensburg (Afrisam) Management Safety Commitment (2016) This category recognises those managers who go the extra mile in supporting their 14 _ QUARRY SA | JULY 2017 health and safety teams to develop and implement a sustainable system. • Maria Pienaar (Afrimat/Infrasors) • Danny de Villiers (Raubex) • Letisha van den Berg (Afrimat) [this award was given in recognition of Letisha’s work during her time at Afrisam] Safety Manager's Award for Outstanding Commitment This award was presented to Johann Pretorius from Raumix Aggregates in recognition not only of his commitment to his own company, but also of his contribution to ASPASA and the industry. It acknowledges his work across different operations, his membership of various regional committees, and his attendance of, and contribution to, related meetings, workshops and audits. Health & Safety Service Provider Excellence (2016) This award was presented to consultants Paul Chamen and Ronelle Affinand from NOSHCON in recognition of their assistance to ASPASA members and their commitment to helping those members develop and implement their health and safety systems. The award for Best Operational Manager (2016) went to Afrisam Newcastle’s Kobus Meyer. The operation also received the Top Performer (2016) award with a score of 97.18%. This marked the third consecutive year that Afrisam Newcastle received the top performer award and contributed to it receiving an award for Consistency in Achieving Showplace status for 5 Consecutive Years. Operations are awarded ‘Showplace’ status after achieving an audit score of 95% or above. Another Afrisam operation – Afrisam Umlaas Road – was also recognised for Consistency in Achieving Showplace status for 5 Consecutive Years.
