aggregates industry, he also believes that the event provides
industry players with an invaluable networking opportunity.
“Not only do you get to meet industry peers and key
role players, the platform provide s insights into new
developments,” he says. “It was definitely worth investing
my time. The process talks are always of interest, and I was
particularly interested in the screening technology paper, as
well as the sand wash solutions paper.” Looking at potential
future trends in the South African quarrying industry,
Singleton points to environmental pressures in terms of
legislation and compliance, together with the management
of slimes dams, as areas that are going to be of increasing
importance in future.
Andrew Gutherless, director and Africa sales manager of
Ronin Inventory Management Solutions, was particularly
interested in the new types of technologies used for
inventory management systems as well as increasing
productivity and maximising turnaround cycles. As another
returning conference exhibitor, Gutherless notes attendees’
interest in what Ronin can offer the quarrying industry. In
terms of trends to watch, Gutherless says, “I think the current
trends within the quarrying industry will focus on pedestrian
detection systems due to the incoming DMR legislation, as
well as accurate volumetric control, both prior to and post
plant throughput.”
Nico van Rooyen from DC Geomatics explains that
the company decided to attend the conference for the
networking opportunities and to highlight the possibilities
of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) – or drones – in
the mining environment. “We offer total aerial surveying
services, including stockpile surveys, slope monitoring/
detection and topographic surveys to the mining sector in
sub-Saharan Africa.” n
