The DMR was sending representatives out prior to the‘ silly season’ to encourage mines to take additional precautions to check for sobriety among on-site workers and machine operators. Following this visit, DSS began breathalysing the on-site workers daily. And it worked. According to Van Wyk, within three weeks of instituting the daily breathalyser tests, they had already caught two people they would never have suspected.
