I had the privilege of calling business leaders to invite them to have lunch with Don and me. The response was “what date, time, location.” Don listened to leaders’ challenges and related passionately how he used the systems approach using the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence to run his company. He shared with them how he felt the first time he received a Piñon evaluation feedback report but then realized it was about improving his company. He often said “you’ve got to put your ego in the drawer.” As I left the luncheons, I often thought how invaluable it would have been to have a recording of Don’s passionate conversation about his employees, his community, and Quality New Mexico’s role in helping New Mexico become the “State of Excellence.” Don often said, “I want to have a great business, in a great community, in a great state.” In Don’s honor, the Don Chalmers Passion for Excellence Award was created to annually honor an individual who exemplifies outstanding leadership in the pursuit of performance excellence, and one who has furthered performance improvement beyond the boundaries of his/her organization. The first recipient, Dr. Mike Sather, was recognized at the 2016 New Mexico Performance Excellence Awards (NMPEA) Ceremony. We invite YOU to nominate a New Mexico leader for the 2017 Don Chalmers Passion for Excellence Award. Nominations are due on December 1st. The honoree will be recognized at the 2017 NMPEA Ceremony April 19th at Isleta Resort.
