It’ s Miller Time
Things are changing at 20 Mile Athletic Center. Recently the USAG Girls competition program went through a major overhaul after losing their Team Director. The coaching loss was followed by an uncertainty of where the program would be headed. As fate would have it the owner, JR Jaquay, received a resume from a Texas coach looking for a change. In mid June, Jaquay received a resume from Stephanie Miller, a coach who had spent the last 5 years coaching girls competitive gymnastics at a well respected training center in Denton, Texas. Miller was looking to make a life change and Jaquay saw an opportunity to restart his girls program. It just so happened that Jaquay was scheduled to coach a gymnastics camp in Denton in late July. He knew that fate was making a statement.“ I just felt that I was being led to Stephanie. She submitted her resume just weeks before I was going to travel to the town in Texas where she worked. I couldn’ t pass this opportunity up.” Jaquay stated. The interview occurred at Starbucks and what was anticipated to last 30 minutes went well beyond that. Jaquay recalls,“ I was so intrigued by her responses to my interview questions that we ended up having a nearly 90 minute meeting. I was very impressed by her attitude and philosophy.” That meeting led Jaquay to request a second interview, this time having Miller fly to Parker so he could see her work with his athletes. What he saw was the spark of a person who loved gymnastics. The athletes and parents saw that too. Miller definitely left an impression on 20 Mile and was offered the position of Head Girls Coach. Miller’ s former employer has stated that she valued her as employee because of her high work ethic, strong attention to detail and ability to get maximum results from her athletes. Jaquay already sees a drastic change in the attitude of the athletes.“ Stephanie just commands attention. She has the knowledge to make the slightest corrections in order to get the most out of each routine.” Jaquay says.
During the last few months, Jaquay has taken over the reigns of Girls Team Director. Since the time he has taken over he has implemented a high standard of communication, creating parent socials and laying out expectations of both athletes and parents. With the addition of Stephanie as Head Girls Coach, he sees the momentum continue to build into a strong gymnastics family the girls program had been lacking for some time. Coach Miller will continue to work with JR in implementing strength and conditioning programs as well as athlete expectations that will create a new system of success for Team 20 Mile. The goal is for Miller to take over the full position of Girls Team Director after a 6-12 month mentoring period by Jaquay. In addtition to heading the Girls USAG program, Miller has plans to create a TOPs Team( Talent Opportunity Program). This program is a talent search and educational program for female gymnasts ages 7-10 and their coaches and is a program based on skill and strength development. Miller recently had 3 of her 4 former athletes qualify for the National TOPS Testing.
