OFFICE OF PATIENT EXPERIENCE & ENGAGEMENT (OPXE)
In FY2017, the Patient Experience Steering Committee and the Office
of Patient Experience & Engagement (OPXE) developed and adopted
a UAB Medicine definition for the patient experience: “The sum of all
interactions, shaped by the UAB Medicine culture, which influence
patients’ and families’ perceptions across the continuum of care.” This
definition is an important component of our continued work to educate
UAB Medicine on the patient experience and how we can work together
to continually improve and enhance the way we deliver care.
The steering committee has taken this definition and separated it
into four themes that, if realized, will create an exceptional patient
experience. We have titled this the “exceptional experience framework”.
The four themes or quadrants are as follows: providing high-quality
care, building trusting relationships, developing patient-centric
processes, and creating healing environments. Throughout FY18, we
will be launching the exceptional experience framework throughout
UAB Medicine.
Additionally, OPXE added more clinical expertise in 2017 by welcoming
three associate experience officers (AXOs): Gaurav Jain, MD; Todd
McCarty, MD; and Roland Short, MD.
