McClay Library
Studying can be stressful, but at least when you start at
Queen's you know you'll have access to the best library facilities
and technology to make getting through essays and exams
that little bit easier.
At Queen's, tradition sits comfortably alongside the
modern, and the award-winning McClay Library is one
of the most significant buildings at the University since
the construction of the iconic Lanyon Building in 1849.
Fresh, hyper-modern and tech-savvy with all the
conventional facilities you'd expect, the Library is at
the contemporary heart of study and academia at
Queen's.
Designed by Boston-based architect
s Shepley Bulfinch
(the brains behind libraries at Yale and
Harvard) the Library
has received many awards, most rece
ntly The Society of
College, National and University Libr
aries (SCONUL) Award,
presented every three years to a UK
library that best
meets the needs of users and staff
.
Smart people like a smart building
and the Library has
an array of green credentials: natural
light sensors,
automatically-operated windows to
decrease electricity
consumption, a natural ventilation
system and strategically
placed chilled beams to cool compute
r spaces for
optimum efficiency.
Situated at the edge of Botanic Gard
ens, the Library is just a
few minutes walk from the main Lany
on Building. Simple,
student-friendly services, such as a
laptop-lending scheme
and self-service book issue and retu
rn really raise the bar on
service. With extended opening hou
rs during exam season,
you have no excuse to avoid hitting
the Library; in fact, you'll
want to be there!

The McClay Library also houses the
iconic CS Lewis
Reading Room. This serene reading
space, decorated with
glass-engraved quotations from the
Belfast author's works,
is also home to a hand-carved repli
ca of a particularly
famous wardrobe door from 'The Chro
nicles of Narnia'.
Not many libraries can boast that!

at QUEEN'S
Named after one of the University's major benefactors,
Sir Allen McClay, the Library opened in 2009. Each day,
nearly 10,000 users take advantage of its extensive
book and journal collections, reader spaces, computer
workstations and group study rooms. As the main library
at Queen's, the majority of degree subject books can be
found here, from Anthropology to Archaeology and
Engineering to Economics.
