At Queen's, tradition sits comfortably alongside the modern, and the award-winning McClay Library is one of the most significant buildings at the University since the construction of the iconic Lanyon Building in 1849. Fresh, hyper-modern and tech-savvy with all the conventional facilities you'd expect, the Library is at the contemporary heart of study and academia at Queen's. Designed by Boston-based architect s Shepley Bulfinch (the brains behind libraries at Yale and Harvard) the Library has received many awards, most rece ntly The Society of College, National and University Libr aries (SCONUL) Award, presented every three years to a UK library that best meets the needs of users and staff . Smart people like a smart building and the Library has an array of green credentials: natural light sensors, automatically-operated windows to decrease electricity consumption, a natural ventilation system and strategically placed chilled beams to cool compute r spaces for optimum efficiency. Situated at the edge of Botanic Gard ens, the Library is just a few minutes walk from the main Lany on Building. Simple, student-friendly services, such as a laptop-lending scheme and self-service book issue and retu rn really raise the bar on service. With extended opening hou rs during exam season, you have no excuse to avoid hitting the Library; in fact, you'll want to be there! This serene reading space, decorated with glass-engraved quotations from the Belfast author's works, is also home to a hand-carved repli ca of a particularly famous wardrobe door from 'The Chro nicles of Narnia'. Not many libraries can boast that! the contemporary heart of study and academia at QUEEN'S Named after one of the University's major benefactors, Sir Allen McClay, the Library opened in 2009. Each day, nearly 10,000 users take advantage of its extensive book and journal collections, reader spaces, computer workstations and group study rooms.
