The gangly Italian was initially best known for being Valentino Rossi ’ s half-brother . But his methodical improvement in the past three seasons not only brought him within a whisker of the 2020 Moto2™ title ; it earned him seat in MotoGP™ , too . After only limited success on Moto3™ machinery , Luca shot to prominence in the European Moto2™ category in 2015 . Steady progress was undermined by a serious left shoulder injury , sustained at Le Mans in 2017 . He scored one race win in 2018 and two in 2019 but 2020 was when he finally fought for a title and lost out by just nine points . He enjoyed a steady debut season in MotoGP™ , scoring two top ten finishes . But more will be expected of him in 2022 , when he has a full factory Ducati GP22 at his disposal .
