In the recent era of Marc Marquez dominance , it was Andrea Dovizioso that pushed the serial champion hardest . 2019 marked the third consecutive year in which the Italian veteran finished runner-up in the MotoGP™ standings . This should come as no surprise to anyone watching Dovizioso win the 2004 125cc World Championship or push Jorge Lorenzo in the 2006 and 2007 250cc title fights . But his turnaround from MotoGP™ ‘ nearly man ’ to regular challenger was remarkable . A troubled 2020 led to him quitting Ducati and taking time out from racing . Yet he still raced the final five races of 2021 for Yamaha after Maverick Viñales ’ surprise departure and is ready for a full campaign with RNF Yamaha on full factory bikes for the year ahead .
