SPORTS FOR HOPE: Wellness, Healing, and New Beginnings for Individuals in Drug Rehabilitation

At the Department of Health – Treatment and Rehabilitation Center( DOH-TRC), where individuals are courageously rebuilding their lives from substance dependence, compassion and community support can be as transformative as any clinical intervention. This year’ s Sports for Hope outreach project, organized by the Toby’ s Youth Sports Foundation( TYSF) in partnership with the Rotary Club of Greenhills( RCGH), demonstrated exactly that— showing how sports, creativity, and livelihood opportunities can nurture resilience for people undergoing drug rehabilitation. Held last December 3, 2025 at Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, Taguig City, the event also featured sponsorships from JCI Manila and 5am Gang Run Club.
Sports as Therapy: Reclaiming Strength Through Wellness
Hours before the formal program began, the organizers introduced a Pickleball Sports Clinic, drawing the patients into a lively and engaging atmosphere. For
individuals in drug rehabilitation, physical activities serve as more than recreation— they can reduce stress, regulate emotions, rebuild physical health, and strengthen social bonds.
With each serve, rally, and burst of laughter, the participants experienced movement as a form of healing. The clinic allowed them to rediscover the joy of healthy play, a reminder that they are capable not only of recovery but of thriving.
Skill-Building for Sustainable Renewal
After the sports clinic, donors visited the center’ s Vocational Learning and Training Section, where the sewing livelihood program— launched by the Rotary Club of Greenhills in 2023— continues to flourish. The program, anchored on the belief that skills empower people in recovery to reclaim economic independence, provides hands-on training using industrial sewing machines and donated materials.
The trainers proudly showcased the patients progress and craftsmanship. Moved by the commitment of the beneficiaries, the donors strengthened their support by giving additional materials to ensure that the program remains robust, sustainable, and aligned with the goal of preparing individuals for future livelihood opportunities after rehabilitation.
A Program Rooted in Hope, Solidarity, and Transformation
The formal program commenced with an opening prayer followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. In her welcome remarks, Ms. Arielle Miguel, from DOH-TRC expressed deep appreciation for the partnership behind Sports for Hope. She emphasized that recovery from drug dependence is most successful within a compassionate community that recognizes the humanity and potential of every patient.
The Rotary Club of Greenhills President, Ms. Shan Sangalang, followed with a message underscoring the organization’ s belief that rehabilitation is not just a medical process— it is a social responsibility. She encouraged the patients to stay focused on the goal to reform and also affirmed Rotary’ s continued support for programs that uplift individuals working toward sobriety and reintegration.
A lively song and dance performance by the TYSF employees added an atmosphere of joy and encouragement. This was followed by a poignant special song number from a patient-beneficiary, giving voice to the emotional journey of confronting one’ s past while courageously stepping toward a healthier future.
An inspirational talk by Rotarian Simon Ang reminded the audience that change is possible, and that hope becomes stronger when they surrender their problems to Go with steadfast faith. Soon after,
patient-beneficiaries showcased special dance numbers, each performance reflecting creativity, growth, and the therapeutic value of expression in rehabilitation.
A Legacy of Hope: Turning Over Gifts, Uplifting Futures
One of the key highlights of Sports for Hope was the formal turnover of gifts from to the beneficiaries. The donations symbolized sustained partnership and the shared belief that healing is strengthened when communities come together. The formal program then concluded with closing remarks from TYSF Chairman Mr. Jose S. Claudio, Jr. who thanked the donors, volunteers, and DOH-TRC staff for making Sports for Hope a meaningful success. He also reminded the patients to learn from their experiences, choose the path towards hope and change.
Afterward, the organizers led the distribution of gifts and snacks, allowing for warm interactions and shared moments of encouragement.
Recovery Continues— And So Does Hope
Sports for Hope demonstrated that rehabilitation is not a solitary path. It is a journey strengthened by sports, enriched by skills, and deepened by community. For individuals overcoming drug dependence, these experiences offer more than momentary relief— they offer a vision of who they can become.
As the program closed and the patients returned to their routines of healing, one message lingered unmistakably: hope is a powerful catalyst for change, and every act of compassion— no matter how simple— echoes across the long and brave road to recovery.
