Students Share Their Course Selection Wish List by Margaret Xue

As the 2020-2021 school winds to a close , students begin selecting courses for next year based on a complicated web of skills and relationships . Some students feel pressured by their parents ’ high standards , while others lack confidence in their choices .

Head of School ’ s View Ms . Faustina says that there have been a few changes to the course catalog this year , and she revived the fashion design class for next year due to demand .
Digital media , graphic design , citizenship , and sustainability were also added during the past three years . Ms . Faustina believes that all three courses contain critical 21st-century skills .
The Wish List Some students wish there were more classes available than at present . not be taught in a classroom , rather , it would be more like an internship experience with the school administration . He thinks this will teach students how to manage companies in the future .
11th-grader Kei Taichi wants a course that would teach students how to do taxes and manage finances . He thinks this is far more critical than core classes like calculus .
Kelly Xu , an 11th-grader , believes this school should expand its fun activities with an ice-skating elective . She likes the idea of classes reflecting hobbies .
9th-grader Ben Han says that this school should provide a class where students improve their communication skills by talking about universal topics on their own time . This class would help students be more open-minded , and it would help kids better express their feelings in an unstructured way .

11th-grader Olha Oliinyk said that she appreciates the art classes at SLAS . She thinks that the lessons can help her achieve her dream of becoming an art major in university .

Suggestions Welcomed Ms . Faustina said that no students have yet given her suggestions of classes they think should be a part of SLAS . However , if a student were to do so , she would take all of their ideas into consideration .
