RETAIL REIMAGINED: Building a More Connected Retail for Everyone

By Mitch Locsin First Vice President and Head of Enterprise Core Business PLDT and Smart
In every sari-sari store, grocery, or shopping mall I visit, I always notice that Filipino retailers are some of the most hardworking and creative people I know.
They’ ve been navigating so many changes over the past few years. From the shift to digital, changing customer habits, to logistics challenges and payment trends— retail has truly transformed. But with all the change comes opportunity. Retail is changing, but so are we.
One thing I often encounter from business owners is how tough it is to keep up with customer expectations. Everyone wants things faster, easier, and more personalized, whether they’ re shopping online or in-store.
The good news? Retailers who embrace the right tech are the ones who stay ahead. And I don’ t mean just big companies, many MSMEs are already making great use of digital tools to run their operations more smoothly and serve customers better.
Today, things like stable broadband, cloud access, and mobile connectivity are essential. They allow stores to process payments, track inventory, manage deliveries, and even protect customer data in real time.
I’ ve seen retailers use these tools to create small but powerful moments like sending personalized messages to loyal customers, automating sales promos, or just avoiding stockouts during big sale days. These moments build loyalty.
Smart Stores, Smarter Decisions
We’ re also seeing more“ smart stores” around. These are shops that use analytics, automation, and real-time dashboards to run better.
What used to be available only to big chains is now being adopted by small retailers too. All it takes is the right partner and scalable tools. And the best part? You don’ t need to overhaul everything. Even small changes can lead to big improvements in customer experience.
Digital Growth is Happening Beyond NCR
Business transformation is now being observed nationwide, and I’ ve been most excited about what’ s happening in the regions. From Batangas to Bohol, we’ re seeing local retailers embracing digital with a lot of heart and hustle.
That’ s why our focus at PLDT Enterprise is not just digitalization, it’ s inclusive digitalization. We’ re investing in regional fiber, mobile coverage, and data centers so that even remote businesses can go online, reach more customers, and compete fairly.
That’ s how we help build a stronger, more balanced economy nationwide.
It’ s About Tech and People
At the end of the day, technology is only as powerful as the people behind it.
I’ ve had countless conversations with business owners who aren’ t just looking for tech, they’ re looking for guidance, understanding, and real partnership. They want solutions that make life easier for their staff, and more satisfying for their customers.
That’ s the kind of collaboration we believe in at PLDT Enterprise. Retail is changing, and it will continue to change. But one thing won’ t: our shared goal of making life better for the people who power this industry from store owners to frontline workers to loyal customers.
As we look to the future, let’ s keep asking: What more can we do to help retailers thrive? I believe we can build that future together— step by step, story by story, and with purpose.
