Reflecting now, I realise that the Qs are built
and developed. They aren’t the result of some
happy accident, but of judicious selection
and personal development into what is,
ultimately, a sound that Malcolm hears
best. In plainsong it has an open window. It
remains a rare sound that especially resonates
in us. I was recently reminded that young
choir voices emerge and blend through
mimicry both of the technique of more
mature voices in the group, but more often,
of that of its director. Voices Malcolm pickedout. I really have never heard these ‘neon’
pieces sung so well. Perhaps no other leading
boys’ choir would have taken on such a
project? To have made this exceptional music
there had to exist an exceptional partnership,
a blend of young voices, indomitable
directorship and pro-active Foundation
support. Winchester College’s Quiristers are
unique. It has been a particular honour to
work with Malcolm and the Qs, and to create
something so fresh and anthemic with them.
I hope everyone enjoys it.
