to teach pediatric surgeons , gynecologists , urologists , gastroenterologists , advanced practitioners , fellows and nurses how to treat and manage patients with colorectal and urogenital conditions . More than 100 providers attended , representing 11 states across the U . S . and 30 countries around the world .
The course was first taught in 1985 by Alberto Peña , MD , founding director of Children ’ s Colorado ’ s International Center for Colorectal and Urogenital Care . Dr . Peña began teaching the course to share his novel technique

improperly during pregnancy , preventing bowel movements .
Prior to 1980 , surgeons treated these children with a procedure that had poor success rates and carried an increased risk of further injury . That year , Dr . Peña tried his new technique for the first time . Today , it is the standard of care for kids with anorectal malformations .
In addition to providing educational programming for attendees , this year ’ s Peña course also provided an opportunity to celebrate the contributions Dr . Peña has made throughout his career .

of anorectal malformations ,
discussions on the challenges
of short-and long-term
postoperative care , and
instructions for managing
associated urologic and
gynecologic problems ,

course will expand to a full
four days , during which
participants will benefit from
additional education related
to Hirschsprung disease , a
