A letter from a fellow questioner at Children ’ s Hospital Colorado
Dear colleagues ,
Today ’ s researchers are , of course , exploring new questions . But they are also attempting to achieve the impossible by answering the questions that have kept scientists , doctors , patients and families awake at night for decades .
That work is underway right here at Children ’ s Hospital Colorado , where rearchers at the Mike McMorris Cystic Fibrosis Research and Care Center have leveraged collaboration to test and prove new therapies for a devastating disease . Now , they ’ re exploring genetic therapies and searching for a way to correct the genetic mutation that causes CF in utero ( p . 4 ). Meanwhile , our juvenile diabetes research group is leading the way in understanding what causes diabetes , how to better treat it and ultimately , how to prevent it altogether .
This work is possible because we have seen incredible advances in science , technology , data management and more that allow us to dive deeper into known diseases and expand the therapeutic pipeline with promising treatments , including cell-based therapies , gene therapies , and new drugs and devices .
At this moment of great possibility , I could not be more excited to start my work as Children ’ s Colorado ’ s inaugural Chief Scientific Officer , Child Health . In this role , I will expand our research capabilities and work to formalize collaboration to reexamine questions we ’ ve never before been able to answer and push the limits of pediatric research .
I have identified five key goals to facilitate research that improves health for both children and the adults they will become :
1 . Build and coordinate childhood health research activities 2 . Develop strategies to broaden our scientific programs and the core resources that support them 3 . Facilitate transdisciplinary , cross-campus collaboration 4 . Develop faculty and recruit the best and the brightest 5 . Define strategic and operations priorities for child health research
The answers to enduring questions in pediatric research have the power to transform countless lives and alter the course of human health . Now is the moment . Consider this your invitation to ask the impossible .
Best regards ,
