Al Thumama Stadium is the first FIFA World Cup stadium to be designed by Qatari nationals , with its design having been inspired by an iconic piece of traditional fashion in the region . The circular structure and woven design are reminiscent of the gahfiya , a woven cap worn by men and boys across the Middle East .
The gahfiya has special significance as a symbol of independence and maturity , marking every young boy ’ s path to adulthood . This traditional head covering has different styles , colours and names depending on which culture it belongs to ; Qatar ’ s um nira gahfiya has been one of the most worn head coverings for centuries .
