Tony has also worked closely with the Greg
Norman Golf Foundation, now known as Junior
Golf Foundation of Queensland and is currently a
director of that body. “The aim of the foundation
is to get kids involved in golf,” he said. “We’ve had
Adam Scott, Karrie Webb, Jason Day, Katherine
Kirk, Steve Bowditch, Cameron Smith and others
come through the ranks.”
This, says Tony, is where kids learn more than life
and golf skills. “They learn about the history and
the integrity of the game,” he said. “I hope that’s
never lost.
“Golf is an honesty game and it was proven again
at the Isuzu Queensland Open when Rowan Blizzard
called a penalty on himself in the last round, which
cost him the tournament.
“If he had thought the ball moved and he didn’t do
anything about it, it would have played on his mind
for a long time. By calling a penalty on himself he
gained a lot of credibility – especially from
his peers.”
For the past decade, Tony has worked as a
volunteer at the Australian Open. He and former
Golf NSW executive director David Allen check
the players’ scorecards. “This year is the 10th
anniversary of checking players’ cards,” he said.
