VOLUNTEERS
MAKE THE TOURNAMENTS GO AROUND
By Bernie Pramberg
They are dotted around the course wearing red
shirts and white caps, enjoying the golf and
exuding enthusiasm. Hardly a golf tournament in
the world can operate without volunteers and the
Isuzu Queensland Open is no exception.
“But we have people from further afield such as
Redland Bay,’’ he said. “They all enjoying watching
the players and also to see how a tournament
functions. We receive some very positive feedback
on their experience.’’
About 25 volunteers are working at the 2015 Open
and Golf Queensland manager Matt Field says they
are stretched to cover a myriad of tasks on and off
the course.
Aside from the satisfaction of being involved,
volunteers receive a free Isuzu Queensland
Open shirt, cap and voucher for a free game at
Brookwater. They also receive an invitation to Golf
Queensland’s annual Volunteer Day. Duties for the
volunteers are varied, ranging through scoring,
spotting, providing information, player transport,
car parking, on-course drinks, tending leaderboards
and more.
“Without the help of the volunteers the event would
simply not function efficiently,’’ said Field. “They all
have a love of golf, but are not necessarily good
golfers or even regular golfers.
“We have a lady who worked at last year’s Open
after just starting the game at St Lucia. She
enjoyed the experience so much she is back again
this year.’’ Field said the majority of volunteers
were golf club members from nearby areas such as
Oxley, Ipswich and host club Brookwater.
