From the CEO - Lindsay Ellis Another Big Year for Golf Queensland An important part of Golf Queensland’s operation is the delivery of a range of State-based Championships throughout the year. With 22 tournaments on the Golf Queensland calendar and 26 on the PresCare Queensland Senior Order of Merit calendar, along with numerous clinics and workshops, it is set to be another big year. We are looking forward to beginning the year of competition in March with a couple of important tournaments on the calendar – the Queensland Indigenous Championships in Murgon and the Queensland Inclusive Championships on the Gold Coast. Queensland is a lucky State to have such a vast selection of different courses to play. It certainly is a special experience to play on the sand green courses dotted around the regional areas. The Queensland Men’s and Women’s Sand Green Championships continue to be popular events after their introduction 26 years ago, with many golfers keen to put their skills to the test. Golf Queensland delivers a diverse range of championship events from the Stroke Play Championships for elite amateurs through to our ‘Country Week’ events that are more inclusive. Not to forget the Isuzu Queensland Open that is run in conjunction with the PGA. As well as the Open being an important opportunity for professionals and amateurs alike, the event has provided great publicity for the game in Queensland. Day won the Queensland Men’s Stroke Play in 2006. Fellow Queenslander Karrie Webb took out the Queensland Women’s Stroke Play twice in the early 90’s. Participation in golf club competition is on the rise in Australia; with Queensland leading the way according to data released recently by the Australian Golf Industry Council, with participation also increasing in the majority of Golf Queensland’s tournaments as shown by over 2,000 competitors participating last year. It is pleasing to see more Queenslanders enjoying more golf and competition is a great way to socialise as well as challenge your skills. No matter if you are a humble club player or you are aiming to win one of our Golf Queensland championships I wish you all the best in golf this year. I hope you will enjoy the read and if you come across a story worth telling, please let us know by emailing [email protected]. Happy Golfing, Lindsay Ellis Queensland has produced some worldclass golfers and it is fantastic to see these names etched on our trophies before they became top of the field. Both Greg Norman and Adam Scott won the Gary Player Classic in 1973 and 1994 respectively, while Jason www.golfqueensland.org.au www.golfqueensland.org.au Autumn 2015 Q Golf 3
