tee but the more I play these events the
more relaxed and comfortable I
am getting.”
For 21 year old Wilkin, who is slowly but
surely making progress up the amateur
ranks in Australia, the opportunity to
play was invaluable.
Aaron Wilkin appreciates
there is more to learn
before turning Pro
The start was Wilkin’s second in a
professional tournament after playing
the Isuzu Queensland Open last August
where he missed the cut. “I think the fact
that the Queensland Open was my first
such event showed,” he said. “I need to
be playing more such events to get more
comfortable in the situation and it was
certainly much better
this time.
“The depth of players is so much greater
to that we face in amateur events and
the chance to play with guys like Bradley
Hughes who has played on so many
different tours including the PGA Tour
and Andrew Dodt makes you realise
where your own game is at and how
much work you still need to do.
“I played with Andrew in the final
round and he showed me that by
sticking to processes rather than getting
frustrated you can turn an ordinary day
into something special. He was going
nowhere through the front nine holes
with several bogeys then played the last
nine in seven under.
“I was playing average myself the first
few holes and probably let it get and lost
patience whereas Andrew just stuck at
his plan and his processes and it all came
together for him. It was pretty special to
witness.
“The first two rounds made me realise
that I could play that kind of golf but
then the last two rounds made me realise
that when the pressure goes on I still
have a lot to learn so I came away with
a much better understanding of where I
am at.”
The growing number of Tier 2 level
events in Queensland and elsewhere
will provide emerging and talented
amateurs an ever increasing opportunity
to showcase and compare their games
and when they get to that next level
themselves that will be all that more
ready for it. Long may it continue.
