A YEAR ON FROM
CYCLONE YASI

While many of the golf courses of central and southern Queensland
were coming to terms with the devastating floods of December 2010
and early January 2011, the northern part of the state was steadying
itself for the onslaught of a new menace in the form of Cyclone Yasi.
Yasi was first identified on January 26th
in the south west Pacific as merely a
tropical disturbance. By the time it first
hit the mainland of Australia in the area
surrounding Mission Beach seven days
later however, such was the growing
intensity of Yasi that winds speeds had
reached as high as 280 kilometres per
hour.
In the early hours of February 2nd Yasi
lashed the coastline between Cairns and
Townsville but more especially the stretch
of coastline known as the Cassowary
Coast between Babinda in the north
to Cardwell in the south. The record
