Programme of Inquiry 2013-14 Who We Are An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human. K R 1 2 3 4 5 6 Where we are in time and place An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives. 5 The way we celebrate special events tell us about our community 5 Our body needs food to grow and keep us healthy. 1 As I grow I learn about who I am and what I can do How we express ourselves An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic. How the world works An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment. How we organize ourselves An inquiry into the interconnectedness of humanmade systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment. Sharing the Planet An inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution. 4 We can express and communicate ideas and experiences through stories. 6 We have unique identities linked to where we are from, and now we are linked by living in the same community. 6 Jobs within a community involve different roles and responsibilities 2 Our lives and environment are impacted by light and shadows 1 Understanding patterns and colours help me know how the world is organized. 3 Living and non-living things are different and both have cycles of change. 4 We write to express our ideas and communicate with others. 3 Machines are used to make work easier. 1 The games that we play help us learn new things in a variety of ways. 2 We share our world with many different minibeasts. 3 Different materials are used in the construction of homes and shelters around the world. 2 Journeys create opportunities and needs to be planned for. 5 The sea provides sea creatures with what they need to live. 4 Stories have key components. 2 Celebrations are an important part of our culture and cultural identity. 6 We can learn from the lives of famous people who are remarkable because of their achievements. 4 Authors and illustrators have many different ways of sharing themes from childhood through print and illustrations. 1 Energy is created in various ways and affects our lives 3 A settlement is organized to provide the things that people need. 5 There are many types of plants in the immediate environment, and they need certain conditions in which to grow and reproduce. 3 Practicing good hygiene, fitness and eating well are important for good physical and mental health. 5 We learn about our world by making comparisons with life in ancient civilisations 4 People have developed ways and systems in order to communicate with others. 2 We understand light and sound through investigations. 6 People take holidays all over the world for a variety of reasons, which include climate, terrain, culture, entertainment and activity potential. 6 By knowing and understanding myself I can develop relationships with others. 5 Life was different for our grandparents when they were our age. 2 People search for meaning through spiritual beliefs and values 1 The human body consists of a skeletal structure, muscular system, internal organs and various connective systems. 3 Mountains are formed in different ways. They have geographical features that support different habitats and a range of human activity. 1 It is our responsibility to act on the knowledge that waste products are made from different materials that can be recycled, re- used or conserved. on this knowledge 4 appropriately. Matter exists in different forms that can be changed and used for a variety of purposes. 1 As humans we are responsible for the preservation of all living species. 6 Through their inventions, people have contributed to changes in society. 3 We can use dramatic arts to express our feelings and ideas. 4 The solar system is part of a larger universe, which affects life on Earth. 2 People have developed systems to prepare for and manage the impact of natural disasters. 5 Electricity is generated in a variety of ways and the way we use it has an impact on our environment. 6 All living plants and animals have life cycles that are characterized by change. 4 Exploration has happened for differing reasons with differing effects. 5 Through the arts, people use different forms of expression to convey their viewpoint 3 Forces have an impact on the human and natural world. 1 Advertising is intended to influence the choices we make. 2 Rivers shape the environment in which they travel and have an impact on human activity.
