The Inquiry Cycle | SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS
Jonah and Alex present their knowledge of geothermal
energy by creating a model and a written explanation
Assessments are used as opportunities to show what we have learned as a result
of our inquiry. We plan and design the best way to express and communicate
our new knowledge. The tasks are usually open ended where children focus on
their self-management and organizational skills to complete a project within a
time frame. Children can work in groups, in pairs or individually. Presentation
skills become a focus as children share and communicate their learning to
others. A list of success criteria or rubric is included for children to self assess
and reflect on their work, as well as peer assess and critique other children’s
work. Teachers also use this rubric to assess the children’s work.
Children in Year 2 were given flexibility on how they chose to show their new
understanding of different energy sources. The children applied their knowledge
by creating a model and written and verbal explanation, a power point, a poster
or drama. While the end products may look different, the important skills
involved in the process of showcasing learning were similar.
Other summative assessments in the Primary School included Year 6 designing
an advertising campaign which incorporated their knowledge of media tricks and
advertising to persuade the primary school to vote for their favourite drink. The
children created their own logos and leaflets, directed, acted in and edited their
own TV advertisement and designed their own
poster and billboard. Many clever and persuasive techniques were used, which
made it very difficult for teachers and children to choose when voting!
Your child/ren will be now be involved
in another cycle of inquiry as a new unit
begins this half term. More details
are included in the curriculum letter.
Drama is used to inform us how hydroelectricity is
created with water.
