Building the Workforce: The Impact of PVF Roundtable Scholarships at Del Mar College
Matthew Busby, CFRE
At Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas, workforce education is not theoretical. It is hands-on, industry-driven, and directly aligned with the needs of employers across the Gulf Coast and beyond. For students preparing to enter the pipe, valve, and fittings trades, access to financial support can determine whether or not they are able to complete their training and enter the workforce prepared.
Through the generosity of PVF Roundtable, that opportunity becomes possible.
PVF Roundtable scholarships support students enrolled in programs such as Welding Applied Technology, Process Technology, and Millwright-Industrial Maintenance. These programs serve as critical pipelines into industries that rely on precision fabrication, safe systems operation, equipment reliability, and technical expertise. The skills our students develop in the lab translate directly to the field, plant, and fabrication shop.
Many recipients of PVF-supported scholarships are balancing coursework with one or more jobs while balancing family responsibilities. For these students, financial assistance does more than offset tuition. It reduces stress, limits the need for excessive work hours, and allows students to focus on earning certifications, mastering technical competencies, and completing their programs on time. These students are working hard to earn their education and scholarship support is a critical fuel to their success.
One recent scholarship recipient shared:
“My name is Genevieve Rodriquez. I'm a single mother, a full-time college student, and a combo welder working long, demanding hours often in extreme heat or cold. I'm pursuing a degree in Process-
Technology to create a better future for my son and build a life I can be proud of.
This scholarship helps relieve some of the financial burden I carry as a single mother balancing work, school, and raising my child. Receiving this scholarship allows me to focus more on my studies and less on financial stress. It helps me stay on track, finish my degree in Process Technology. And move one step closer to creating a stable, successful future for both me and my son.”
That is the tangible impact of industry-supported giving. Scholarships also help students purchase required tools, complete safety certifications, pay for testing fees, and dedicate time to lab practice. In turn, employers benefit from graduates who are trained, credentialed, and ready to contribute on day one.
Del Mar College works closely with industry partners to ensure curriculum reflects real-world standards and evolving workforce needs. The partnership with PVF Roundtable represents more than financial assistance. It reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the skilled trades and ensuring a sustainable talent pipeline for the future.
When PVF Roundtable members contribute to scholarship funding, they are investing directly in the next generation of welders, technicians, and maintenance professionals who will help maintain critical infrastructure, energy systems, manufacturing facilities, and industrial operations across our region.
Del Mar College is deeply grateful for PVF Roundtable’s continued leadership and generosity. PVF Roundtable’s commitment not only opens doors for individual students, but it also strengthens families, supports local industry, and reinforces the long-term health of the pipe, valve, and fittings sector.
Together, Del Mar College and PVF Roundtable are preparing skilled professionals who will keep vital systems operating safely, efficiently, and reliably for years to come.
