most reliable methods of internal corrosion protection.

Lower Maintenance and Operating Costs

Because cement lining promotes smoother flow and helps prevent leaks or failures, systems typically experience fewer interruptions and lower overall repair costs throughout the pipeline’s service life.

Self-Healing Capabilities

One of the unique properties of cement mortar is its ability to “heal” small cracks through a natural process known as autogenous healing. When water, calcium, and carbon dioxide interact, calcium carbonate crystals form and fill in tiny voids—meaning the lining can actually strengthen over time rather than degrade.

A Secondary Chemical Barrier

Cement lining also creates a high-pH environment inside the pipe. This alkalinity forms a protective film on the steel surface, adding an extra layer of corrosion resistance. Even if a small area of steel becomes exposed, the chemical environment still offers significant protection beyond the physical barrier of the lining.

How Cement Lining Is Applied

There are three primary methods used to apply cement mortar lining to steel pipe:

- Spin Lining

The pipe is placed on a spinning machine, and centrifugal force distributes the cement mortar evenly along the interior, creating a smooth, uniform lining—essentially a “pipe within a pipe.”

- Spray Lining

For large-diameter pipe, a spraying head is inserted into the pipe and travels through it, coating the interior walls as it moves.

- Hand Application

Typically used for fittings or custom fabricated pieces that can’t be spun. Hand application requires experience and precision, making it the most specialized of the three methods.

Cement lining remains one of the most reliable and time-tested solutions for protecting steel pipe in water service. Its durability, low maintenance requirements, and proven performance make it a practical choice for municipalities, industrial facilities, and infrastructure projects of all sizes. As the demand for long lasting, corrosion resistant systems continues to grow, cement lined piping will remain a trusted option for engineers, fabricators, and end users across the industry.
