INTRODUCTION TO PUTNAM COUNTY

Transportation
Interstate 64 passes through the center of Putnam County. The new four-lane US Route 35 opened in 2009 and connects the Crooked Creek interchange at I-64 to Buffalo Bridge. The Kanawha River also flows through the center of the county and is a major carrier of barge traffic. Railroad service is provided by CSX Transportation and Norfolk & Southern. Airports are located in both Huntington and Charleston.

Shopping
Rather than a centralized shopping district, shoppers have a variety of local retailers and businesses located throughout the county. Neighborhood centers such as Liberty Square, Putnam Village, Eleanor Shopping Center, Mid Valley Plaza, Scott Junction, Hurricane Marketplace and the downtown areas of Putnam’ s small cities and towns offer many options. For those who prefer mall shopping, Putnam County is located between the two largest malls in the state, a 20-25 minute drive to Charleston Town Center in Charleston or Huntington Mall in Barboursville.
